Part III. Write an emulation of a Jack Tale.
Suggested time allowance: Four to Five 50-minute class periods.
The task for this lesson is to read a Jack Tale and write an emulation of that tale from their cultural perspective.
Introduction:
- Have students read the tale and tell you what the storyteller is trying to say.
- You will be asking them to draw inferences in order to help them make critical judgements and unique interpretations. For example, have students tell you:
- I'm guessing that...
- I predict...
- It would be better if...
- I really liked how...
- If I were the main character...
- What I didn't like was...
This method will help the students explain connections between prior
knowledge ( Anticipation Guide Technique ) and the experiences they are having with the tale from their cultural perspective.
Allow students to compose a Jack Tale. This writing should be taken through the writing process. Give students the opportunity to share their tales with classmates.
Encourage students to think of a place or custom in their region and to write a "folktale" about it.
